Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia in order to ensure control over the Georgian maritime legal regime visited the Joint Operations Center of the Agencies of Georgian Executive Authority, got familiarized with the existing situation and gave tasks to the staff of the Center regarding the future action strategy.
Joint Operations Center was built on the territory of Supsa Radar Station of the Coast Guard Department of the Border Police of MIA by the financial support of the Export Control and Related Border Security Program of the United States of America. The Center unifies 8 state agencies and is coordinated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The main task of the center is to fight effectively against the threats existing in maritime space; control illegal acts, marine incidents and legal regime; prevent, detect and response to violations causing threat to Georgia as well as the whole region; establish joint system for exchange of information regarding the maritime safety; ensure implementation of joint maritime operations by the participants of the Joint Operations Center as well as plan and implement agreed activities in crisis situations.
Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili especially thanked US partners for assistance provided in establishment of the Center:
"Supsa Joint Maritime Operations Center was established by the financial support of the Georgian strategic partner. There are only 12 such centers in the world and among them is the Center of Georgia. The Center ensures maritime and border security as well as intensifies international cooperation with strategic partner states in the field of fight against international and transnational crime”, - said the Minister of Internal Affairs.
