Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili, the Minister of Internal Affairs participated in the World Congress on Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Science and Consequence Management. At the Congress the issues of non-proliferation of CBRN substances, security and incident results management were discussed as well as the best practices and advanced technologies in the field of fight against these challenges were reviewed.
The Minister of Internal Affairs addressed with a speech 250 participants from about 40 countries around the world. As Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili said, "Our country's strategic location causes the threats of illegal trade in radioactive and nuclear substances that is evidenced by several facts of smuggling of nuclear materials identified by our law enforcement agencies. Therefore, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is doing its best to maximize the protection of the state borders. In general, it is impossible to deal with these threats by the efforts of any particular institution or state. I can say with certainty that Georgia is one of the most successful examples of close interagency coordination in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear field and development of international cooperation mechanisms. "
The Ministry of Internal Affairs is actively involved in combat CBRN smuggling. With the assistance of American and European partners, a number of large-scale projects have been implemented in the field of border security and combat cross-border crime. At the same time, the competence of the Ministry of Internal Affairs covers the responses to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incident and conduction of relevant forensic expertise. In particular, the relevant unit of the Emergency Situations Management Agency of the MIA eliminates the incidents and conducts harm reduction measures, while the Forensic-Criminalistic Department of the MIA has the opportunity to carry out CBRN crime-related expertise effectively.
