Briefing of Mr. Mamuka Tchelidze - Head of the Main Division of Fight against Organized Crime of the Central Criminal Police Department
Ministry of Internal Affairs continues active fight against drug related crimes and drug dealing. During recent period, law enforcers solved a number of drug related crimes and arrested drug dealers.
Within the last two weeks in Tbilisi, Shida Kartli, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Samagrelo, Guria, Adjara, and Kvemo Kartli the police officers seized up to 2 kg of different types of narcotic drugs, namely, especially large amount of Heroin, “Suboxin”, “Pregabaline”, “Buprenorphine”, so-called “Ecstasy”, “MDMA” were seized. During this period, for committing drug related crimes, 19 persons were arrested – including 14 citizens of Georgia, 1 citizen of Armenia, 1 citizen of Azerbaijan and 3 citizens of Iran.
2 citizens of Iran were arrested by the police in Tbilisi for committing drug related crimes. During search conducted in their temporary place of residence, especially large amount of “Ecstasy” was seized. In addition, 2 000 pills of different types of narcotic drugs were seized.
Several days ago, law enforcers arrested citizen of Armenia, who systematically used to sell narcotic drugs. As a material evidence, the police seized liquid containing Tetrahydrocannabinol placed in 702 small glass flacons and 171 250 GEL obtained from drug realization.
Crime committed by him envisages imprisonment from 8 to 20 years or life imprisonment.
Ministry of Internal affairs continues active fight against “criminal underworld”. In this regard, significant legislative amendments are planned.
Ministry of Internal Affairs prepared legislative package, which is currently under consideration in the Parliament of Georgia. According to this draft law, supporting the activities of the “criminal underworld”, organizing criminal meetings, addressing to the member of “criminal underworld” or to the “thieves in law” is considered to be a crime. Criminal punishment for being a member of “criminal underworld” or for being “thief in law” will be aggravated.
Yesterday, law enforcers arrested so called “thief in law” in Tbilisi International Airport right after arriving in Georgia from the Republic of Belarus. He was born in 1973, had criminal record and was deported from the Republic of Belarus. Crime committed by him envisages imprisonment from 7 to 10 years.
It was established by the investigation that the accused has been recognized as “thief in law” since 1993. It was also established that last couple of years he lived in Russian Federation, where he was actively involved in so-called “criminal discussions”. Investigation is in progress on the fact of “thief in law”.
Yesterday, based on the court ruling, 2 persons were arrested by police officers for committing extortion perpetrated by group. One of the arrested person, who was born in 1983, has criminal record and another arrested person, who was born in 1980, has multiple criminal record and is currently under probation, is so-called criminal authority.
Crime committed by them envisages imprisonment from 6 to 9 years.
The investigation established that they were trying to extort large amount of money from citizen by threatening him with physical assault. It was also established that arrested persons were in connection with the “thieves in law” and were acting under their orders.
Investigation is in progress on the fact of extortion perpetrated by group, committed with the aim of obtaining large amount of property.
In order to ensure public order and safety, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia continues active work. The Ministry will adequately respond to any criminal act and every person committing a crime will be strictly punished in accordance with the law.
