Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mgebrishvili held meeting with the regional director of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) -Kyle Williamson. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chief of Mission Nicholas Berliner and attache from DEA.
The sides positively assessed the cooperation that developed in recent years between the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and Drug Enforcement Administration and reviewed the issues connected with enhancing the existing relations.
Giorgi Mgebrisvili acquainted Kyle Williamson with ongoing and implemented reforms held in the sphere of the fight against drugs.
At the meeting it was pointed out that in the report of the US State Department on the drug control international strategy 2016 Georgia was given high credits for the activities held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in contributing to the international investigation cases in the field of the organized crime and drugs.
As it was pointed out by Kyle Williamson, as a result of the successful cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia in 2016 DEA administration opened regional office in Tbilisi with permanent representative.
Minister of Internal Affairs and head of the regional office of DEA also reviewed the unit created in the Central Criminal Police Department which investigates cases of drug transits. Based on the mentioned unit’s analyses, several important drug routes have been exposed.
Giorgi Mgebrishvili outlined the importance of the joint activities and trainings in the fight against drug crime.
