The Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia - Vakhtang Gomelauri, approved the 2021 Action Plan for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The obligation to implement effective mechanisms for the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities is envisaged by the 2006 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified by the Parliament of Georgia in 2013. Herewith its worth to note that on June 14, 2020, the Law of Georgia on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted, which imposed specific obligations on state bodies, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. The aforementioned action plan envisages the planning and implementation of relevant activities throughout 2021 in order to fulfill the obligations provided by law.
The action plan defines the priority directions of 2021. According to the action plan approved by the Minister, the goals of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2021 include: litigation process improvement and access to the services of the Ministry for people with disabilities; Consideration the needs of people with disabilities during anticipated emergencies; Developing the necessary skills of the staff of the Ministry for dealing with people with disabilities; Adaptation of existing buildings and other infrastructure.
In order to achieve the defined goals, the Ministry plans to cooperate with persons with disabilities, their representative organizations and other non-governmental organizations working in this field during the implementation of the "Action Plan for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021", as well as during the action plan for the upcoming year.
The Ministry recognizes the need for persons with disabilities to enjoy their rights without discrimination and will take effective steps to improve the legal status of these persons in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
