Mr. Shalva Khutsishvili, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs took part in the Road Safety Conference organized by the “Georgian Alliance for Safe Roads” and the UN Permanent Mission in Georgia. The conference was held within the frames of the “United Nations Road Safety Decade 2011-2020”.
Mr. Shalva Khutsishvili talked about the projects of traffic safety implemented and planned by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The representatives of the Government, civil society and the embassies discussed the challenges faced in the field of road safety of Georgia as well as their views and the possibilities for solving the problem. The video showing the rules for yielding the zebra-crossing and sidewalks to the pedestrians was also demonstrated at the conference.
1.3 million people die on the world's roads each year and this number is increasing. In 2010 the United Nations announced the Road Safety Decade “2011-2020” and called on the countries to develop an action plan and implement preventive measures in order to decrease the death rate on the roads by 50% by 2020.
