The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, participated in a meeting with representatives of the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), paying an official visit to Georgia. Along with the managers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, representatives of the State Security Service, General Prosecutor's Office, Special Investigation Service, Government Administration, and the Supreme Court also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, Mr. Aleksandre Darakhvelidze provided the visiting delegates with comprehensive information regarding the functioning of Temporary Detention Isolators within the Ministry's system and the Temporary Accommodation Center for persons without legal grounds in Georgia. In addition, the representatives of the subcommittee were introduced to the reforms that have been both implemented and are currently underway in recent years. The aim of these reforms is to guarantee the full protection of the rights and freedoms of every individual. Mr. Aleksandre Darakhvelidze also addressed questions of the Subcommittee’s representatives.
It is noteworthy that the Subcommittee’s visit to Georgia marks its inaugural occurrence. The primary objective behind the visit is to bolster the safeguarding of individuals who are detained, shielding them from torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.
The Subcommittee will prepare report based on their findings and issue corresponding recommendations.
