The Parliament of Georgia supported the package of legislative changes elaborated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia on ensuring traffic safety.
The main purpose of the amendments is to protect the health and lives of those involved in traffic movement, improve the services of the LEPL Service Agency, as well as to refine the driving test, which will bring Georgia closer to EU regulations and increase the credibility of Georgian driving licenses.
One of the main novelties of the legislative changes is the definition of a moped as a motorized means of transportation. After the changes, the moped will be subject to registration in accordance with the law and citizens will need to obtain a new - "AM" category driving license in order to drive the mentioned means of transportation.
In addition to the mentioned, mopeds will be subject to the same regulations as other motorized vehicles, taking into account certain characteristics.
The minimum age for driving a moped has been defined 16 years. It should be noted that citizens with a license to drive a motorized vehicle of any category / subcategory will also have the right to drive "AM" category vehicle.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia actively cooperates with the technical inspection centers and in the initial and transitional period, registration of mopeds will also be possible at the technical inspection centers.
One of the most important novelties of legislative changes is the reform of the practical test for obtaining the driver’s license. According to the project, practical part of the driving exam will be held in two stages. The first stage (special maneuvers) will be held at the closed examination site, as it is currently carried out, and in case of its successful completion, the second stage will be held in real traffic conditions (in the city), on pre-selected routes.
New regulations of the driving test for those willing to obtain "B" and "BE" category (vehicle with trailer or without trailers) will come into force from March 14, 2022, and for those in other categories / subcategories - from October 3, 2022.
It should be noted that obtaining the driver’s license for a vehicle defined under "AM" category and registration of a vehicle belonging to the same category is voluntary until March 1, 2022, after which the mentioned procedures will become mandatory.
