The Parliament of Georgia approved the draft laws prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. As a result of the legislative changes, the punishment measures for drug dealers have become significantly strict.
Under the legislative changes, the minimum sentence for selling drugs was defined by 10- year imprisonment. In case of selling drugs in large quantities, the perpetrator will be sentenced from 12 to 17 years in prison, while in case of selling drugs in especially large quantities the term of imprisonment has been defined by 14 - 20 years or lifetime imprisonment.
It is also notable that as a result of legislative changes, the punishment for the illicit sale of a psychotropic substances, its analogues or a potent substance has also become significantly strict.
Under the legislative changes, the term of imprisonment for selling a psychotropic substance has also become tougher and perpetrators will face from 3 to 6 years of imprisonment. In case of selling the mentioned substance in large quantities, the term of imprisonment was defined from 5 to 9 years, and in case of selling the same substance in especially large quantities - from 10 to 14 years.
In parallel with amendments made in the Criminal Code of Georgia, amendments will also be made to the Law of Georgia on Police, which aims to increase the efficiency of police work. According to changes, the police will be able to identify an individual on the spot and verify his data in the unified information-analytical database of the Ministry by means of special electronic program which ensures the secure storage of data and their protection against illegal use.
