In August 20 as a result of the avalanche which blocked the Omalo-Lechkhumi road and also disrupted movement on Alvani-Omalo road sector, Georgian citizens and tourists were unable to leave Omalo.
In accordance with the assignment received from the Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mghebrishvili, on August 23 rescue operation was launched in order to help tourists in leaving Omalo. The operation was held with the involvement of 2 helicopters of border police.
The rescue operation was directly headed by the Deputy Minister Teimuraz Mghebrishvili and director of Emergency Situations Management Department Zviad Katsashvili.
Tourists and Georgian citizens were brought from Tusheti villages to Omalo by border police vehicles. Rescuers and border guards ransported 620 tourists to Pshavela village, Akhmeta from Omalo by helicopter and were then transported to Telavi by police and rescuers’ vehicles.
The officers of VII border sector (Omalo) of the V border police division also provided tourists with food supplies.
