1 year anniversary of the Tbilisi Regional Secretariat of the “Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centers of Excellence” of European Union was marked at the Academy of MIA. Anniversary was opened with the speech delivered by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Chairman of Interagency Coordination board for the fight against chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear hazards Levan Izoria. He expressed gratitude toward EU and all the organizations which participated in the foundation of the Secretariat.
Guest was also greeted by Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia Boris Iarochevitch and Francesco Marelli Head of CBRN Risk Mitigation and Security Governance Program at the United Nations UNICRI. They positively assessed the fact that MIA elaborated the national strategy for CBRN risk reduction and creation of Interagency Coordination Board for successful implementation of the mentioned strategy.
The event was also attended by the representatives of diplomatic corps as well as international organizations and various state officials. CBRN Centers of Excellence is an initiative of European Union which is being implemented by Joint Research Center of European Commission and Security Governance Program at the United Nations (UNICRI).
The Initiative involves more than 60 partner states united from all around the world. Partner countries are united in 8 secretariats. One of the secretariats was founded in Tbilisi on July 9, 2013 and dislocated in MIA police academy, covering south-east Europe, South Caucasus, Ukraine and Moldova. Main function of the center includes contribution to the CBRN capacity building of partner counties.
Within the frames of the anniversary representatives of MIA Emergency Management Department have held demonstrative exercise presenting skills of fast response to CBRN incidents.
For effective implementation, under the decree adopted by the Georgian government the above mentioned inter-agency board was created.
By the end of the event the meeting was held between MIA Emergency Management Department and Security Governance Program at the United Nations (UNICRI).
