The Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, held an introductory meeting with the Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the US Department of Energy's (DOE)- Jill Hruby.
Within the framework of the meeting, the parties discussed the existing cooperation and achievements between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Department of Energy (DOE). The parties also defined future cooperation plans and priority directions. The US Ambassador to Georgia - Kelly Degnan also attended the meeting.
Vakhtang Gomelauri emphasized the significance of the strategic partnership between the US and Georgia in the field of nuclear security.
The Minister noted that as the primary agency responsible for addressing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats, strengthening capabilities in nuclear nonproliferation and radiation safety is one of the key priorities for the Ministry.
He also highlighted the importance of enhancing the capabilities of units operating near the occupation line in detecting and responding to WMD materials.
In turn, Jill Hruby assured her continued assistance in supporting the Ministry of Internal Affairs in strengthening nuclear security capabilities through professional qualification raising and specialized technical equipment.
At the end of the meeting, Vakhtang Gomelauri expressed gratitude to the US Department of Energy (DOE) for their fruitful cooperation and contribution to the institutional development of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
