Mr. Archil Talakvadze, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs held a meeting with Dr. Dubravka Simonovic, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women.
At the meeting the activities carried out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia in the field of violence against women and domestic violence as well as the achievements in this direction were summarized. The Deputy Minister familiarized the UN Special Rapporteur with the program launched by the Ministry in 2014. Within the frames of the mentioned program, more than 2100 meetings were organized with the population with the aim of public awareness; media campaign on domestic violence issues was conducted; map and reports uploaded at the web-site of the Ministry provide comprehensive information on relevant responses to the facts of violence; special trainings for police officers were held and approximately 500 female police officers are actively involved in the process of fight against domestic violence; the authority of Georgia has changed and tightened the legislation.
As a result of implementation of the above mentioned program, in 2015 the index of prosecution of perpetrators has increased from 40% to 90%, number of restraining orders has increased from 227 to 2598. Also, the rate of detection of domestic crimes has doubled.
In 2016 with the support of the European Union the Ministry of Internal Affairs will launch a new program on fight against domestic violence, which envisages implementation of certain measures against early marriages.
Dr. Dubravka Simonovic is on her first official visit to Georgia in a position of the the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women. In June 2016 she shall submit a report on Georgia at the 32nd session of the UN Human Rights Council.
