The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Nino Javakhadze met with the European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis during his official visit to Georgia.
At the meeting Nino Javakhadze thoroughly discussed the Ministry’s policy in relations with human rights protection, addressed the past and planned activities in this direction which will unsure positive development of the following areas: domestic violence, violence against women, crimes committed on the ground of discrimination and juvenile justice.
Stavros Lambridinis was interested in the events which occurred on May 12 in the night clubs and the Ministry’s plans pertaining May 17. Nino Javakhadze provided the guest with comprehensive information regarding investigative activities which took place on May 12 in the clubs “Basiani” and “Gallery” and their results, as well as the situation in the clubs before the police entry and performed police actions.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs discussed the information available at the Ministry regarding the scheduled manifestation on May 17 and once again emphasized the full readiness and willingness of the Ministry to ensure freedom to assemble and expression of opinion in the peaceful environment.
It is the first official visit to Georgia by Stavros Lambridinis. During the two-day visit, the EU Special Representative already held meetings with the representatives of the non-governmental sector, the Public Defender’s Office and the representatives of the executive branch of Georgia.
