Within the framework of the GEIGER working group meeting organized by the General Secretariat of INTERPOL and INTERPOL National Central Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, the simulations on combating illegal trafficking of the Nuclear and Radioactive (RN) materials, were held at the Border Cross Points (BCPs) of Sarpi, Batumi Port and Batumi International Airport.
The two-days practical simulations were attended by the representatives of the Patrol Police Department, the Forensic-Criminalistics Department and the Emergency Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Security Service, the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance, LELP Agency of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection.
Within the framework of the GEIGER working group meeting, up to 100 participants from 10 different countries observed the practical activities on combating illegal trafficking of the Nuclear and Radioactive (RN) materials, deterrence and respond activities at the BCPs, as well as investigative, CSI, safety and decontamination procedures conducted by the Emergency Management Agency.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs – Giorgi Butkhuzi and Senior Project Manager of the Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism Prevention Unit of International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) Headquarters - Aaron Mosby made the opening remarks.
The aim of the working group meeting was to share Georgia’s advanced capability in the region to combat illegal trafficking of RN materials at the BCPs, as well as experience sharing on detection of and responding to the RN substances.
