Georgia is the first country in the Caucasus region, which will be involved in the EU new three-year project on the international Police cooperation. The project aims at operational cooperation between the countries, exchange of information, control of illegal money circulation and joint coordination of the detention of criminals.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia as one of the main partner was invited to the Conference on Fight against International Crime, which was held in Salzburg Federal Land, Austria. The conference “Network of the Coordinators for Fight against Organized Crime – law enforcement, exchange of information” was participated by the representatives from 33 European countries.
The main speakers of the Conference were: Mr. Besik Amiranashvili, the First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Wilfried Haslauer, the Governor of Salzburg Federal Land, Mr. Oldřich Martinů, the Deputy Director of Europol and General Franz Lang, the Head of Austrian Criminal Police.
In his speech Mr. Besik Amiranashvili focused on the importance and necessity of deepening the international police cooperation in the field of fight against organized and transnational crime. According to Mr. Besik Amiranashvili, Georgia has already signed agreements on cooperation in the field of fight against crime with 15 states from 28 member-states of the EU. During the last 3 years, the Ministry of Internal Affairs sent police attaches to many European countries.
The First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs emphasized the importance of moving to a new stage of cooperation with Europol. The mission of the Europol positively assessed the legislation of Georgia and the existing practice in the field of protection of personal data. This year, Georgia will sign the Agreement on operative cooperation with Europol.
Within the frames of the conference, Mr. Besik Amiranashvili held bilateral meetings with Mr. Oldřich Martinů, the Deputy Director of Europol, General Franz Lang, the Head of Austrian Criminal Police, Mr. Andreas Holzer, Head of the Department for Combating Organized Crime at the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Bureau and Mr. Alexandru Pinzar, the Head of the National Police of Moldova.
