Briefing of Mr. Mamuka Chelidze, the Head of the Main Division Combating Organized Crime of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
Georgian law enforcers continue active cooperation with European colleagues, as a result of which another successful special operation was conducted in Greece.
As a result of operative-investigative activities carried out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and the Greek Police on May 21 of this year, 17 citizens of Georgia and members of Georgian criminal group were detained in Athens. According to the existing information, these persons had an active relationship with the so-called “thieve in law” – Nodar Shukakidze (a.k.a. “Nodar Gldanski”) - detained during the special operation simultaneously carried out in France and Greece in April of the current year.
According to the information of the investigation, in the territory of Greece the offenders committed approximately 100 different crimes. The offenders are accused of robbery, burglary, stealing of apartments, as well as keeping and realization of large amount of stolen items and illegal purchase and keeping of firearms.
During the search of the offenders` apartments the law enforcers seized various types of firearms and stolen items as material evidences.
All 17 detainees are accused of crime envisaged by the Articles 187, 374 and 98 of the Criminal Code of Greece, which envisages imprisonment up to 20 years in length.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia with the objective of effective fight against the international organized crime, by means of the police attaches shall continue active cooperation with the law enforcement agencies of the EU member states, Interpol and EUROPOL in the direction of preparation of operations, implementation and operative information delivery.
