Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili and Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri opened Technological Innovations and Training Center of Operational-Technical Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Foundation of the center is aimed at: trilateral cooperation between Georgia, United States and European Union in the field of nuclear and radiation non-proliferation by means of which Georgia will be involved in international processes, capacity building of the country in order to ensure non-proliferation of radiation and is also aimed at Ministry’s contribution in the field of human and material resources. Today award ceremony was also held for BCP employees who achieved best results in the intensive training. During the same event the document on equipment delivery from the US Department of Energy was signed as well.
The event was attended by Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and high-rank officials from the agency, representatives of National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) of the United States, US Ambassador Richard Norland and embassy representatives.
Operative-Technical Department of MIA is actively working to ensure border safety of the country and to provide high quality IT support. One of the directions of the Department is to control the movement of radioactive materials through the border.
In order to ensure control of the movement of radioactive materials through the border crossing points, Operative-Technical Department works closely with the US Department of Energy and within the frames of “Second Line Defense” (SLD) program radiation control equipment was installed (2006-2010) in all border crossing points and implemented staff training. For capacity building of Georgia in the sphere of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and radiation 40 million US dollars was spent approximately within the frames of SLD program.
Cooperation of Operational-Technical Department with the US Department of Energy is not limited only with technical direction; standard action procedures and personnel training system for sustainable development are also included in the spheres of cooperation with SLD Office.
Operational-Technical Department along with US experts and with support of Isntitution of Transuranium of the Joint Research Center (JRC) implemented intensive training course-“Detection and Response of Radioactive Materials at Border Crossing Points” for BCP personnel, as a result of which up to 330 employees of Patrol Police and Customs Department were trained.
