The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an information campaign – “Do not take childhood away”. The main purpose of the campaign is to eliminate child marriage, increase public awareness and ensure crime reporting to the police in a timely manner.
The presentation of the camping was held at Rooms Hotel. Deputy Minister Natia Mezvrishvili opened the ceremony. The representatives of Government and Non-Government organizations, Public Defender’s Office, international organizations and members of the Parliament also attended the event.
At the event, the Human Rights Protection Department delivered the presentation and informed society about the statistics of early marriage. In 2018, an investigation was launched on about 180 facts related to child marriage. It is noteworthy that in most cases, the law enforcement agencies were informed about crime several months after the incident happened, which makes difficult to react to crime promptly and effectively. In this regard, the main challenge is the lack of public awareness. This is why the information campaign was launched.
Within the framework of the campaign various events, including meetings with the population of the region, local government representatives, schoolchildren and teachers, as well as with other stakeholders are planned. Employees of the Human Rights Protection Department and local police representatives will also participate in these meetings. Additionally, within the framework of the campaign, patrol police and community police officers will deliver information booklets to the population of Tbilisi and regions.
The information campaign will last for 18 days. The campaign is organized with the support of UNFPA, within the framework of the program – “for Gender Equality”
