Law on “New Psychoactive Substances” initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs is effective from May 1, 2014. According to the mentioned law illegal turnover of substances belonging to the compounds of criminalized chemical class is deemed to be an offense. Illegal manufacture, produce, purchase, keep, transportation, transfer or distribution, also illegal taking into or out of the territory of Georgia or illegal transit of a new psychoactive substances shall be punishable with the term of imprisonment for 5 years. The new law defines 9 classes of chemical compounds as well as new separate psychoactive substances which do not belong to these classes.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia keeps working on law changes within the frames of effective combating new psychoactive substances from November, 2013. The law relies on new approach of four European countries – Austria, Cyprus, United Kingdom and Switzerland.
