On March 3 the US State Department released the report of 2016 on drug control, which along with other countries addresses Georgia. The report provides the assessments of the measures carried out in Georgia in 2015 against drug-related offenses. The mentioned reports are published annually on the US State Department's official website.
According to the report:
- In 2014 the Georgian authorities seized a record amount of liquid heroin - 2.8 tons;
- In the first ten months of 2015, as a result of the significant operation carried out for seizure of illicit drugs 37 kilograms (kg) of cocaine and 60 kilograms (kg) of amphetamine were seized;
- For the purpose of drug-routs surveillance, in December, 2014 the Ministry of Internal Affairs created a special analytical unit, which contributed to numerous operations for seizures in Tbilisi Airport;
- In 2015 the anti-terrorist units of the Central Criminal Police were trained in the issues of the methods for combating money laundering and analytical skills, as well as the expanded cooperation with the customs service of Georgia;
• In September, 2015 the United States completed a two-year project for development of an inter-agency anti-drug cynology unit at Tbilisi International Airport;
• 2015 is also significant for designation of two more Georgian Liaison Police Officers to Germany and Spain. It is planned to assign the liaison Police officers to Poland, Kazakhstan and Italy in the near future;
• Within the frames of implementation of the Drug Enforcement State Strategy and Action Plan, in 2015 the campaign promoting the healthy lifestyles in youth was strengthened by positive public messages;
• In November Georgia created the National Monitoring Centre for Drugs; also the Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction;
• Georgia also uses a curriculum developed by the US for training of the personnel involved in the treatment of drug users and professionalization support. The program creates the staff of local trainers, who will carry out the training across the country.
