The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze took part in a high-level meeting on improving access to jurisdictional services for victims of sexual violence. The event was held in the framework of a 16-day global campaign against violence against women.
Representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia and heads of international organizations also attended the event. The meeting was organized by the UN Women within the framework of the UN joint program on Gender Equality implemented with the support of the Government of Sweden.
During the meeting, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze discussed the response standards of the Ministry to the cases of sexual violence, the progress achieved and challenges. The Deputy Minister also stressed the importance of special approaches during the prosecution of such crimes and the need for victim oriented approaches during investigations.
As the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs noted, properly addressing prosecution of sexual violence cases is one of the priorities for the Ministry. In this regard, the Ministry has already taken tangible steps, namely, specializing the investigators on sexual violence investigation. 232 Police officers of the relevant territorial and structural units of the Ministry have been granted the status of specialized investigators.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has traditionally joined the yearly 16-day global campaign on Violence Against Women, reiterating its condemnation of any form of violence against women. Violence is a major obstacle to achieving complete equality for women.
