Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Levan Izoria opened two-day international forum of Regional Stability: “Challenges and Responses to Nuclear Security and Non-Proliferation” at Courtyard Marriott hotel. The conference is organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Civil Council on Defense and Security (Tbilisi, Georgia) in close co-operation and financial support of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change and U.S. Department of State.
The forum brought together Georgian officials, foreign and local experts working in the field of radiation and nuclear issues as well as officials from the United States, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom of Great Britain, Egypt, Jordan and Israel. The mentioned countries are involved in NPT annual Review Conferences.
The results of Tbilisi International Forum will be introduced at 2015 NPT Review Conference which will be held in UN Headquarters, New-York .
The mentioned conference will contribute ensuring better radiological and nuclear security and nonproliferation practices and policies on global as well as on the local levels.
The main discussion points for the conference were: Current global and regional issues regarding nuclear and radiological security and proliferation threats; The national response: policies, legislation and institutions for tackling proliferation and security threats; Bilateral Cooperation: What has been achieved in cooperation with other States (both "donor" and neighboring). Infrastructure and solidarity and what remains to be done; International and regional cooperation: developing and improving institutions and initiative.
