Minister of Internal Affairs, Vice Prime Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri has resigned.
In connection with the mentioned, Vakhtang Gomelauri issues a statement:
“I would like to inform the public that I have made a decision to resign from the position of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
This decision was not easy for me to make. Since 2011, I have been a participant of the fight led by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, which has been a turning point for our country. All the achievements that our country has had under the leadership of the government team are precious and source of pride to me. Therefore, I remain loyal to this team. In the future, at any time, I am ready to stand by the state and the ruling team, if required.
For more than 10 years, I held positions of Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Head of the State Security Service and Vice Prime Minister. Obviously, being on high-ranking state positions for so many years is a very laborious task and requires a lot of energy. Today, when the situation in the country is calm, I allowed myself to ask the team for my resignation, which will allow me to devote more time to my family - my spouse, children and my newly born grandchild.
I would like to express my gratitude towards Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose belief in me gave me the opportunity to serve my country from the highest positions. His trust and example gave me a special incentive to do my job conscientiously and contribute to strengthening the statehood of Georgia.
I would like to thank Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the entire government team, whose support I have always felt and who has met my decision with understanding.
I would like to thank each employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, each hero police officer, firefighter, and everyone with whom I have cared for the security of our country for many years. I would like to wish each police officer and the future minister success in their future endeavors.
I remain loyal to my country and my team. I wish my country and government peace, security and the fulfillment of all its ultimate goals." - Respectfully, Police Colonel General Vakhtang Gomelauri.
