On June 2, 2020 Emergency Management Center 112 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs received a report from the representative of Tbilisi Cleaning Service stating that corpse of the newborn child was found. Police crew was deployed at the scene several minutes later after the report was received.
Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched investigation regarding the upper mentioned fact of infanticide by the mother- crime envisaged under the article 112 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
A number of immediate investigative activities have been carried out at the crime scene by the investigation, including the transfer of the newborn’s body to Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau for further forensic studies. Regarding the mentioned fact, relevant individuals have been interrogated, those who might possess valuable information on the incident, including the female juvenile in presence of psychologist and social worker. In order to establish the truth over the case, relevant expertises have been appointed.
Investigation is in progress to verify all relevant versions and to obtain valuable evidences.
As for the allegations made by some media outlets regarding the supposed arrest of a female juvenile and discarding of a newborn child’s corpse by the police officer, is a complete falsehood and disinformation.
Ministry of Internal Affairs would like to call on media outlets to comply with the requirements of the Juvenile Justice Code of Georgia, considering sensitivity of the case as well as best interests of a minor and abstain from provoking any precedents of violating juvenile legal rights.
