Along with Georgia female police officers from 18 states were presented in the aforementioned conference including Poland, Greece, Moldova, Turkey and other.
The conference was opened by the Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mgebrishvili.
“It is a great power for the Ministry of Internal Affairs to have female police officers along with men. This is a European standard which we treat with caution and are proud of. One of the main tasks of the Georgian government is to ensure gender equality and realize the policy established for defending women’s rights. With this aim, a number of legislative changes structural changes have been made which will continue to be implemented in the future. Signing the so called “Istanbul Convention” of the European Council and preparation of the relevant changes in accompanying regulations in relation to boost gender issues is utterly important,”-stated Minister of Internal Affairs.
Welcoming speech was also delivered at the conference by the United States Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly.
Participants of the conference observed a minute of silence to the memory of the female police officer killed in Kakheti region in the line of duty-Maia Javakhishvili.
International conference –“Women in Police” is held annually in March within the frames of the partnership between the US States Department Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The conference is aimed to increase qualification and motivation of the law enforcers and outline the role of the female police officers in the police structural units.
At the end of the conference female police workers will improve their professional skills by doing practical exercises and share their experience, which is necessary for fulfilling professional duties.
