Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia had a meeting in Berlin with Mr. Thomas de Maiziere, the Minister of Interior of the Federal Republic of Germany.
At the meeting the sides discussed issues related to cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of both countries.
Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili introduced to his German colleague the ongoing and planned reforms of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Mr. Thomas de Maiziere expressed his gratitude for the visit of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia and noted: "We are a federal country, therefore your decision to visit the Federal Lands was very important. This indicates that you are planning to enhance cooperation at all levels, which I sincerely appreciate. "
According to the Federal Minister of Germany, several thousand unscrupulous individuals, abusing the prolonged procedure of getting the status of "asylum seekers" in Germany should not damage the best relations between Georgia and Germany. As Mr. Thomas de Maiziere mentioned, the German side is well aware that nobody in Georgia is persecuted. Accordingly, the Germany actively considers the issue of granting the status of a "safe country" to Georgia.
German Federal Interior Minister positively assessed the cooperation in the field of readmission between Georgia and Germany. The two sides also stressed the importance of successful cooperation between the Georgian police attach and the Central and Federal Criminal Polices of Germany.
At the meeting the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia focused on the great importance of international police cooperation on the country's road to EU integration, which is the foundation of security. Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili expressed hope that the Georgia-Germany relations in the law enforcement field will move to a new level and the joint fight against crime will have its outcome in the near future.
The Parties agreed to strengthen preventive measures, deepen the cooperation and regular exchange information and experts in terms of the fight against organized crime.
After the meeting, the two countries' Ministers of Internal Affairs signed the Implementation Protocol of the Agreement on "Readmission of Persons Residing without Authorization", which will further contribute to the deepening of cooperation between Georgia and the Federal Republic of Germany in the fight against illegal migration.
Mr. Giorgi Mghebrishvili expressed his condolences to Mr. Thomas de Maiziere over the death of the prominent German politician, Vice-Chancellor, a former Interior and Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia invited his German counterpart on an official visit to Georgia.
