Vice Admiral Clive Johnston, the NATO Joint Navy Commander awarded a medal to Mr. Papuna Davitaia, the Georgian Liaison Officer and the employee of the Coastguard Department of the Border Police of MIA for participation in the NATO counter-terrorism operation - "Active Endeavour".
The objective of the operation is prevention, detection and elimination of any attempt to commit terrorist attacks in the Mediterranean Sea, Straits of Gibraltar and surrounding maritime areas.
The Georgian Liaison Officer serves in the NATO permanent formation from 2014. The Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and the Allied Maritime Component Command Naples on participation of the officers of the Coastguard Department of the Border Police of the MIA in counter-terrorism operations was signed on April 28, 2010.
Involvement of liaison officers of Alliance partner states in NATO permanent formation is an unprecedented case that is aimed at development of cooperation between the NATO and Georgia.
