Under the organization of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Interagency Coordinating Board meeting for the fight against Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear hazards was held at the Ministry of Internal Affairs within the frames of elaborating national strategy for reduction of CBRN hazards.
In the sphere of CBRN security special attention is paid to the radiation and nuclear components. Taking into consideration the importance of the mentioned components, radiation and nuclear security is one of the responsibilities for the state security. Georgia’s nuclear and radiation security policy is based on the N1540 resolution adopted by UN Security Council and local legislation, particularly “law on nuclear and radiation security”. In the line of the above mentioned, Georgia is also connected with various international conventions.
Environmental radiation varies periodically which is defined by nuclear incidents, catastrophes and accidents that take place around the world.
Special emphasis is also made on proper arrangement of special disposal facilities for radioactive wastes, reconstruction of special facilities and proper management. Security measures for radiation need to be improved as well as measures in the sphere of medical irradiation. It is also important to develop capabilities in the forensic sphere for radiation expertise. Owning to the strategic location there’s a high risk of illegal transit of radioactive materials. Accordingly, protection of state and maritime borders and development of effective border control are among top priorities for the country.
The meeting was attended by members of the group working on nuclear and radiation existing under the Interagency Coordinating Board for the fight against Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear hazards.
