Deputy Minister Levan Izoria along with deputy head of CoE Office in Georgia Alessandro Savaris opened the training course at MIA Academy for the staff of temporary detention isolators. The opening ceremony was held in the attendance of Nukri Gelashvili-rector of the Academy, Head of Human Rights Protection and Monitoring Main Division Aleksandre Badzaghua and Givi Mikanadze -senior officer of CoE project.
The training will cover the topics of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and standards of European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) within the frames of which, 230 employees of temporary detention isolators will undergo training all across the country.
Six-stage training course is aimed at raising awareness of temporary detention isolators’ personnel in the angle of human rights. Training participants will boost their knowledge in issues of protecting fundamental rights in accordance with case law of the European Court of Human Rights. They will also learn about the Standards of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Study programme will cover the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and fundamental human rights, which are stipulated in international conventions.
The training is held within the frames of European Union and CoE Joint Programme “Human Rights in Prisons and Other Closed Institutions” which was launched in July 2013. This is the second activity for the personnel of temporary detention isolators within the frames of the project. In 2014 they successfully completed enhanced training course on –“creating healthy environment at temporary detention isolators and disease prevention” and raised their awareness in the field of ensuring protection of prisoners’ rights and improving availability to the medical treatment.
