In the framework of an official visit, Defense Minister of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis met with the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Aleksandre Chikaidze. The meeting was held at the Joint Operations Command Center in Supsa. The parties discussed new opportunities and prospects for bilateral cooperation and signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministry of Defense of Latvia and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
The Minister of Internal Affairs thanked the distinguished guest for strategic partnership and for the unwavering support of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration and territorial integrity. The parties underlined the importance of Georgia’s membership in NATO and signing of Association Agreement with EU.
Together with high officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the meeting was also attended by the Head of Border Police of Georgia, General-Major Zurab Gamezardashvili and the Director of Coast Guard Department – Captain 2nd Grade Temur Kvantaliani.
Mutual cooperation and the Coast Guard Department development initiatives were discussed during the meeting. The creation of grounds for bilateral cooperation between Ministry of Defense of Latvia and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia revealed the farther needs of cooperation in different fields, including the capacity building of Georgian sea divers in Latvia, exchanging experience regarding the operations of Joint Command Center and developing other important cooperation areas.
Within the framework of the visit, the delegations also visited Poti Coast Guard Base, ship yard workshop and the construction site of ship crane pier.
The parties discussed the ongoing reforms, infrastructural development projects, achievements and challenges of the respective agencies of both countries, as well as the means to develop mutually beneficial and results-oriented cooperation.
