Within the frames of the ongoing criminal police reform at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 95 community officers have started working in Isani-Samgori district.
Until recent period, community officers have only been working in Vake-Saburtalo, Didube-Chugureti and Old Tbilisi police divisions of Tbilisi. At this moment, there are a total of 275 community officers operating in Tbilisi.
Sulkhan Tamazashvili- Director of Tbilisi Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs along with Teimuraz Kupatadze- Deputy Head of Tbilisi Police Department and Guram Natsvlishvili- Head of Isani-Samgori Police Main Division, congratulated the community officers on the first working day.
The community officer is a model of community-oriented policing that is widely approbated tool in crime prevention worldwide. Community officer is responsible for addressing important issues and challenges related to juveniles, domestic violence, neighborhood disputes, illegal migration, and problems related to vulnerable groups. Its functions and responsibilities also include: planning and implementation of crime prevention activities; data collection, systematization and processing of information; proceedings of administrative violations; Responding to the witnessed crime and etc.
Officers were selected from the current staff as well as through competition. The winners of the competition underwent several months of intensive professional training at the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The institute of community officer will be first introduced in all districts of the capital, and later, throughout Georgia.
