Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mgebrishvili alongside the Ambassador of United States Ian Kelly has opened the Cynological Center in the Lilo Base of the MIA Border Police. The opening ceremony was attended by the head of MIA Border Police Dato Nikoleishvili, the representatives of Defense Threat Reduction Agency of the US Embassy and other invited guests.
“MIA Border Police plays a very important role for the state security. One of the top priorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is to develop and equip MIA Border Police with high-quality modern technologies. The United States provides substantial support to the capacity building of the Border Police. Opening of the Cynological Center will also contribute to increasing efficiency of the MIA Border Police. I am convinced that our fruitful collaboration will further develop in future and will enable us to accomplish a number of interesting and important joint projects.” - stated Minister of Internal Affairs.
The project was implemented and funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the US Embassy.
Opening of the Cynological Center will contribute to the development of the MIA Border Police capacity building and further enhance land border security of the state.
The project is aimed to train border-guards and dog handlers in order to have qualified staff after completion of the courses, to better ensure protection of the state border.
In addition, on the base of the Cynological Center open-air cages, room for scent training and veterinary ambulance will be operation in full compliance with European standards.
After the opening the Cynological Center, guests were given the opportunity to see the transport means, donated by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to the MIA Border Police.
With the support of DTRA, a number of infrastructural projects have been implemented, including construction of new border sectors and equipping of the State Border with electronic surveillance systems.
