The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze attended the closing ceremony of the Council of Europe (CoE) project - "Fight Against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia" and summarised the activities implemented, challenges and progress achieved in the framework of the project.
The Deputy Minister noted that the fight against crimes committed in grounds of intolerance with discrimination basis is a priority for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and thanked the Council of Europe for its continued support to the Ministry in the fight against discrimination.
Aleksandre Darakhvelidze emphasized the large-scale trainings implemented to improve the qualifications of the law enforcement officers, which significantly increased the quality of investigation. He also highlighted the act of concluding a Memorandum of Understanding between the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and the National Statistics Office of Georgia on the basis of which a unified methodology for statistics on crimes committed in grounds of intolerance with discrimination basis was introduced.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed readiness to continue future cooperation in this direction.
The project has been carried out in close coordination with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and other partner institutions since 2018. It aimed at sharing experience on discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes, raising awareness and harmonizing Georgian legislation with European standards.
