The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze held an introductory meeting with the Head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Georgia, Kemlin Furley.
During the meeting, parties discussed the existing international protection system in Georgia and current actual issues.
Aleksandre Darakhvelidze introduced Kemlin Furley ongoing structural reform in the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which aims to increase the efficiency of international protection procedures.
The Deputy Minister discussed the plans for the improvement of the asylum policy and its legislative framework, which focus on bringing the current asylum system in Georgia closer to the best European standards. The parties agreed on the active engagement of the office of UNHCR in Georgia in this process.
The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the parties to ensure the best interests of asylum seekers and persons under international protection. At the end of the meeting, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze thanked Kemlin Furley and the Office of UN High Commissioner (UNHCR) for their support of the Ministry of Internal affairs over the years.
